8th Graders Set Physics in Motion

Student tests Rube Goldberg Machine at lab station

Each year, at the end of their Energy, Forces & Motion unit, 8th-graders complete a final problem-solving project.

This year, Ms. Elliott’s class used their knowledge of energy and of Newton’s Laws of Motion to build Rube Goldberg Machines. Each group collaborated to design and build their apparatus, using the limited materials provided and strict design constraints. They identified the scientific principles that made their machine work and documented each energy transfer and transformation that occurred. The top team managed to create and - most importantly - identify 70 transfers and transformations of energy!
